Mountain Man Rendezvous

Yonder Journal

MODERN MOUNTAIN MAN RENDEZVOUS (A.K.A., REENACTMENTS, A.K.A. LARPING) ARE BASED ON THE MID-1800S TRADITION OF ACTUAL MOUNTAIN MAN RENDEZVOUS,

WHEREIN EVERY SPRING, FUR TRAPPERS WOULD COME OUT OF THE MOUNTAINS WHERE THEY FROZE IN ISOLATION FOR MONTHS ON END TO SELL FURS, REPROVISION, TRADE, PARTY, GET NEWS, FIGHT, SLEEP, PARTY SOME MORE, SPEED DATE, MAKE SEX, TALK TO OTHER LIVING HUMANS, GET NAKED, AND PARTY. THESE RENDEZVOUS WERE HUGE, ROWDY AFFAIRS ATTENDED BY EVERYBODY IN THE AREA, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO TRAPPERS, HUNTERS, INDIGENOUS PEOPLES, WIVES, PIONEERS, COWBOYS, EXPLORERS, LOCAL MILITARY, BANDITS, CON ARTISTS, WRITERS, GOLD RUSHERS, ETC.

IN 2020 THE SAME THING HAPPENS, BUT NOW RENDEZVOUS LARP-ERS ARRIVE IN CARS AND CHANGE INTO PERIOD-CORRECT COSTUMES IN THE PARKING LOT BEFORE ENTERING THE SCENE TO TRADE/SHOP; LEARN SKILLS; VISIT WITH OLD FRIENDS; PARTICIPATE IN ARCHERY, SHOOTING AND OTHER MARKSMEN ACTIVITIES; AND BUY OLD-TIMEY ROOT BEERS. THE MORE DEDICATED AND EXPERIENCED STAY FOR THE WHOLE WEEKEND AND SLEEP IN TIN TEEPEES.
